Audience Theory

When looking at audience I researched audience theory in order to support our choices with evidence closely looked into by theorists.
McQuails theory explains how the audience use their media to please them and their needs. This is important to consider when looking into the production of a music video as we have to think carefully about what the audience want to see in the video. this theory closely realtes to Hall and his idea about the relationship that is made between the artist and the audience and also how the audience interpret the video.

Blumler and Katz looked into television media and created the idea that the purpose of this had 4 main needs:
Diversion: This part of the theory explains how the audience want to get away from everyday issues. This can relate to the music video industry as for some videos the image they portray is very unrealistic, shown clearly in Teenage Gurlz by Katy Perry particularly in the M-E-S.
Personal Relationships: The idea of the artist creating a relationship with the audience. This is commonly shown through close-up shots and sight line. Other factors could include backstage shots during the video which are seen to be a privilege for the audience.
Personal Identity: The veiwer of the music video can compare tehir everyday life or situation to the way in which the artist is portrayed. This relates closely to our music video as we have used a narrative in which many people can relate to.
Surveillance: Micheal Jackson is a key artist when considering this section of the theory. It explains how themedia provides the audience with information and news about what is happens around the world
